Five Year Plan
Year One
It can be argued that my first year has already begun, as visa and application preparations to secure the financial side of my trip began in March 2013. On 9th August 2013 I will fly out to South Korea, where I will reside until August 2014. During that time my theatre company (Sweet Tooth Theatre Company) will host workshops and develop performances with a variety of groups from school groups to adults. My main interest is working with a group I can particularly relate to; victims of domestic abuse.
In order to fund this work, I will spend half of my time teaching English at Avalon Elementary and Middle School in Daegu. My hours at the school will be 1-10pm, so I have the mornings available to prepare workshops or take workshops. I also have the weekend’s free, alongside 15 national holidays and extra holiday leave for workshops and performance development too.
Year Two
Upon my return from Daegu I have two different options. One is to complete an MA at either RADA or Guildhall in Acting. The second option is to start a PhD at York University in Theatre through Practice, specialising in Acting.
The Masters at RADA is their Theatre Lab course which specializes in training Actors in experimental performance. The Masters at Guildhall is in Acting and consists of three years in-depth training in voice, movement and performance.
My PhD proposal takes inspiration from the various performances of Shakespeare’s young female characters. Shakespeare wrote his female characters often with particular male actors in mind, and if not, it was written for a male actor nevertheless. So when characters like Rosalind were being performed, the male actor would dress up as a girl and then dress up as a girl dressing up as a boy. There is a certain air of comedy about this situation that is lost when it is just a girl dressing up as a boy. So my big question bounces off the current trend of viewing all male Shakespearean productions, I want to answer is how can I, as a young female actress, create an authentic yet believable character when in one of these roles? And in discovering this question I hope to come up with a technique that can be used in training to help actors create such authentic performances.
Year Three
If I choose to take the PhD route, then this year I will be continuing with my research by putting on at least 3 full length Shakespearean productions this year with a variety of casts. One is all male, one all female, and one mixed. I will perform in two of the three as an actress, thus trying to develop techniques using myself as a guide as well as with other actress’.
Upon completing my MA, I will continue my work with Sweet Tooth Theatre Company creating my own performances as well as continuing working with those suffering from domestic abuse in the UK. I will also continue working as an actor, developing relationships I started to build whilst at Central with the BBC, Globe, Working Title Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures. This year I will continue completing workshops at the Actors Guild and Actors Centre as well as many other locations. My dance and singing training will continue. I will perform in a showcase for Casting Directors and agents, and I aim to sign this year with a better agent. This year is the focus on developing my CV, primarily my skills and accents. I aim to learn 2 accents a year over this five year plan, as well as develop 2 skills a year. This year I will complete my RADA Gold Exam. This year I will perform in or create 3 theatre productions, I am particularly interested in creating a Shakespearean production on location, for example Macbeth in a derelict castle. I aim to perform in two films, either short or feature; the size of the role at this stage isn’t hugely important.
Year Four
During the third year of my PhD, the intention is to test theories and techniques I have started to develop through performance, as well as use mixed Shakespeare productions with the men playing women and vice versa as well as all female productions too.
On the Acting front, this year I will perform or make 3 theatre productions, at least one this year must have a dance or physical theatre element to it. I will perform in 2 films, either short of feature. This time a spoken part, ideally a good spoken part will be played. This year I will perform in a TV production as well as continue my training through membership at the Actors Centre and Actors Guild. I will film 2 commercials for financial purposes, and continue work with my theatre company where possible. Dance and vocal training will continue as well as pushing myself further with learning new skills and languages. Two new skills will be learnt this year as well as developing one language I already know the basics, Italian. This year I will meet with 3 major casting directors as well as learn two new accents.
Year Five
My ultimate aim for year five is to be signed with an agent on the level of Curtis Brown, CAM or Independent. I aim to perform in a BBC drama as well as either perform or create 4 theatre productions this year. Again this year one must either have a dance/physical theatre element or be a musical. Perform in 3 films, either short or feature and at least one of these roles will be a supporting or lead role. I will continue my training through membership at the Actors Centre and Actors Guild as well as my dance training. However this year my training must go up a notch, dance classes must be advanced, during workshops and classes at the Actors Centre/Actors Guild I must be taking advanced classes and always be pushing myself forward. Now my brand and marketing technique is well developed and practiced so needs to be put into action. Sweet Tooth Theatre Company will certainly continue where possible.
